Beautiful Red Squirrel shot in one of the few areas in England where they still survive in the wild, Kielder Forest. These are really lovely animals, much smaller and more attractive (and more reclusive!) than the Grey. Unfortunately it was very dark in the forest and I wanted to shoot using natural light so had to use very high ISO hence the grain in the shot, but it was a real treat to watch them nevertheless. :)

Red Squirrel - Sciurus vulgaris
Body length 20-28cm

Our only native squirrel species. Easily told by orange-red fur and presence of ear tufts; tail usually paler than body, sometimes almost white. Has disappeared from much of former range. Now commonest in N England and Scottish Highlands. Isolated colonies elsewhere, for example, on Brownsea Island, Dorset.

Those hair tufts are pretty crazy. They remind me of an old man's scraggly beard. ;P

A great shot, and the green of the log really offsets the little guy's fur.

I love these little guys, they were my inspiration to make my maskot, ZHOLT.
But ZHOLT doesn't look like a squirrel anymore...
Anyway :+fav:

Hi emc! :)

Thanks for your kind comments. I love those ear tufts too! :D
Wow thanks for the fave!

Is ZHOLT in your avatar?
Many thanks Sheryl! :)
Right now, I'm not using ZHOLT as my avatar, but he's all over my gallery, it's the weird yellow creature with huge dark brown eyes. The idea to draw ZHOLT was a big-ferocious-dragon-like-eletrical-squirrel, nya, forget about it.

Hehe! Ok I see him now! :)
Grain? It's barely noticable. The first thing I though when I saw this was; what wonderful lighting! Considering what you've said that is amazing detail and beautiful, even lighting.
Maybe I'm just very critical of my own work! I had to shoot at ISO1600 and I may have even pushed it a bit further in the RAW conversion so all things considered I guess it turned out ok! Thanks for the kind comments. :)
