Black-tailed Prairie Dog - Cynomys ludovicianus

Black-tailed Prairie Dogs are generally tan in color, with a lighter colored belly. Their tail has a black tip on it, which is where their name is derived from. Adults can weigh from 1.5 to 3 lb, males are typically heavier than females. Body length is normally from 11 to 13 inches, with a 3 to 4 inch tail. They have small ears, but keen hearing, and small, dark eyes, with good vision.

What an adorable creature.  It makes me sad to think that for every wild prairie dog alive today, there were once a thousand.  This means that humans have killed them off to the point that their numbers have declined by >99.9%.  I read somewhere that there was once a prairie dog town that covered 25,000 square miles and contained 400 million prairie dogs, but the biggest towns of this creature today are only about 160 acres in size and contain 4,000 individuals (25 animals per acre).  The best way to keep the numbers of creatures such as prairie dogs in check is by reintroducing their natural predators, such as badgers, coyotes, rattlesnakes, hawks, and especially the black-footed ferret.
